I’ve been a guest artist, educator, speaker, and conductor worldwide—on campuses, festivals, camps, conferences, and more. Working with students of all ages and performing with top-tier musicians is an honor and a joy.

As a proud graduate of “The University of Maynard Ferguson,” I carry forward Maynard’s lessons—engage the audience, share the joy, and make every moment count.

To paraphrase Thad Jones: A good time will be had by all!

I’ve also written custom jazz ensemble and chamber works for my appearances, published through my site with a dedication of your choice—spreading your program’s name.

"I don't think I've seen anyone more effective in communicating this musical language, and fanning the spark into a flame for students! Thank you, Steve, for sharing your time and gifts of music/jazz and life with us!”

A few of my performance charts

Listen to a sample of some charts I’ve used while leading clinics and masterclasses. Want something custom written for your group? I can write a chart specifically to highlight your band’s strengths—making rehearsals and the performance better and much more fun!

"As a guest artist and a clinician, Mr. Wiest really ENJOYS the music-making process. He plays at the highest level of trombone musicianship and that makes every musician want to get in the practice room and keep getting better!”

Some topics I can cover with your group

Of course, we will talk about what you want me to do and how best I can help your students.

Improvisation

Works best with a student rhythm section. I focus on storytelling, vocabulary, syntax, and composition—concepts students can apply instantly.

Composition/Arranging

I tailor sessions to any setting—using digital/hard copy scores, audio, and hands-on demonstrations at the piano. A valuable experience for composers of all levels.

Ensemble Coaching/Masterclasses

This is the core of any guest appearance. Whether leading rehearsals, sectionals, or traditional masterclasses, I create engaging, high-impact sessions for students.

Consulting

Jazz education is evolving, and I love helping programs refine their approach. I offer practical, field-tested techniques that instantly elevate jazz programs.

Lessons

One-on-one instruction remains the gold standard. I break down improvisation, composition, and trombone fundamentals into clear, actionable insights—ready to apply immediately.

I'll write a new piece specifically for your band

I’d love to compose a piece that is written specifically for your group. When students perform a piece written just for them, they bring an elevated sense of ownership and engagement to the project. I thrive on collaboration to create music tied to local traditions, history, or personal connections. SO… together, we can choose a title, style, groove, and highlight soloists or an open solo section.

My writing something custom-tailored to your band will be even more fun for everybody. We can make it happen like I did for these ensembles:

Commissioned by the Evangel University Jazz Ensemble, here is Denver University’s Lamont Jazz Orchestra performing “The Showme Shuffle.”

A brass piece called “New Seasons” was commissioned by The Denver Brass, Denver, Colorado

"It meant so much for all of us to hear such positive comments from someone with your expertise and experience!”
