Ork vs Dragon
Written for the award-winning Lamont Jazz Orchestra the The University of Denver, this is not your usual big band fare! Written in a funky cinematic style and featuring alto II (Ork) and tenor I (Dragon) in two separate solo sections. The first solo section (tenor I) is a high-intensity modern straight-ahead scenario with wide open chromatic choices for comping and improvisation.
As a sendoff to the next solo space a twelve-tone style fugue begins with the trombones and then works its way across the band leading to a funky Miles-Davis style chromatic section for alto II. After a shout chorus, both soloists are given a section to improvise together without the band. The “Ork” and “Dragon” lead the band back in for a wild recap. Highest note for lead trumpet is a concert D above the staff. Standard alto-tenor-bari saxophone section no doubles. This one is pro level, but doable for good university bands and advanced high school groups.
