Princess Deborah
From a series of educational charts called “Groove Quest” Princess Deborah is a slow straight-ahead swing style reminiscent of Neil Hefti’s “Li’l Darlin.” With flugal doubles in the trumpet section and standard alto-tenor-bari saxophone section (no doubles) the biggest challenge with this one is its slow tempo that grooves on a triplet subdivision. The bridge is a virtuosic feature for trombone, but it is also written as a nice playable register for optional trumpet soloist. Trumpets have the melody throughout with the highest note for lead trumpet being a concert F at the top of the staff. This is a great piece for that contrasting style portion of your concert programming.
