Son of South 21st
This composition is written in the style of Steve Wiest’s iconic piece for Maynard Ferguson titled “South 21st Shuffle.” With a similar blues with a romantic interlude format, this piece rocks out from start to finish! As the title implies it is a rock shuffle in the style of its namesake, but this version is challenging but very playable by universities and strong high school programs. The highest note for lead trumpet is a concert C above the staff (including a melodic solo on the interlude sections) standard saxophones with no doubles, rhythm section is guitar (rocked out lead sound) piano (Hammond B3 patch synth if possible) bass and drums. Solo section is for guitar, but can be easily opened up for more soloist. Commissioned as “The Regal C Shuffle” by Jesse Woolery in honor of his father Keith and Keith’s time as a legendary band director in Newton, Kansas, this one is a great closer for any concert!
