Here’s an original that I wrote for my band Vinyl Hampdin. I created the group back in 2014 with the concept of “What would Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, or Tower of Power sound like if they started in 2014?” The group features a stunning vocalist named Lisa Dodd. A native of Alberta, Canada, Lisa is not only an AMAZING and very singular vocalist, but an award winning bassist as well. A MAJOR talent. Here is the lineup for Vinyl Hampdin for the RED album tht includes this featured track:

Vocals: Lisa Dodd, Guitar: Ryan Davidson, Keyboards: Eric Gunnison, Drums: Stockton Helbing, Bass: Gerald Stockton, Trumpet: Frank Greene, Trombone and Composer/Arranger: Steve Wiest, Tenor Sax and Flute: Ray Herrmann, Bari Sax and Flute: Art Bouton, Sound Engineer: Phil “Prince” Bulla.

With “One Song” I wanted to write a “rock anthem” in the style of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” in the aspects of texture and form and even some orchestration (the flutes and 12 string guitar at the top mirror aspects of “Stairway.”) The subject matter for the lyrics was the simple question “What would the Earth tell us if she only had one song?”

Here are those lyrics:

Part One:

I sing to you
Do you hear me?
I am your only home
You know?

Hear me call
Hear me cry
Can you feel me
At all?

I’m alone
I’m afraid
Won’t you please
Listen to your heart

One song
One home
One hope
Alone

One small
Blue dot
So small
In space

No time
To wait
It’s now
Next year
Is too late

Part Two:

I’m calling
Can you hear me?
I’m calling
Can you hear me?
I’m calling

You

Part Three:

Whoa o-o-oh
Whoa o-o-oh
Whoa o-o-oh
Whoa o-o-oh

Please don’t
Make me mad!

Ending:
Small blue dot

One song
