The Pank!

Trombonist/composer/songwriter Jimmy Pankow has been a major influence on my musical world since the early 1970s. Along the way, he has inspired my sound, my stage shenanigans (twirling the horn for one🙃) the way I like to voice and record horn sections, my lead trombone playing… pretty much everything.

And a REALLY cool aspect of that is that he became a friend as well. Getting to know James Carter Pankow a bit along this great journey has been a true joy for me. But the fact that he recorded two solos on my recording project Concerto for Folded Space was an EPIC treat indeed and icing on the proverbial cake.

Here are a trio of videos that relate to this magical event. In the first clip, we see my pal Daniel Pardo and me backstage at a Chicago concert talking with Jimmy about the project and other things. The late great Walt Parazaider stops by for a moment as well. In the next video, we are at the studio in the basement of Chicago guitarist Keith Howlands home in Nashville Tennessee recording King James parts for the album itself. If I look like a fan boy hypnotized by the historical luster of the moment…that’s because I WAS! And finally, in the third clip we get to hear the finished recorded results.

Now that Jimmy has apparently retired from the road (I say “apparently” because with such a tour de force, one can never be truly sure) it is even more important to get this footage out into the light of day for all to enjoy.

So please do so…here is THE MAN Jimmy Pankow with one of his most ardent supporters (yours truly) having a BLAST doin’ that Voodoo that Weedoo…
