When I was but a wee lad, my family visited my great grandparents (from the 19th Century!) in a lovely little town called Cameron in Missouri every summer. My great grandmother had lots of gardens in the back yard, one of which I found particularly fascinating: a bed of tall and perfect violet irises.

WOWZA! As a little guy I would walk amongst these most ephemeral of seasonal treasures and just marvel at their hue and texture. They almost seemed “powdered” like my great grandmother’s face, the violet color spoke deeply to me and put me into a near metaphysical state of mind (yeah…I was easily entertained as a kid😛) So proud and majestic did these plants seem, that I believed they were sentient, had feelings and were talking to me. Maybe they were? Kids are funny that way.

Be THAT as it may, the iris has stuck with me my entire life since those magical days of yore. So much so that I wrote a piece about it. And here it is!

Of special note is that the cellist on the intro is my own son Matthew who is now a professional musician with a very bright future indeed. What a joy to include him on this!

Soloists are myself on trombone, Eric Gunnison on piano, and Art Bouton on Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI)

Enjoy!
